Creative Expression Course

Charlotte O'LearyThe International University of Monaco has started a new Creative Expression course for undergraduate students dedicated to devising new ways to use newly acquired business skills in real world situations.

In a break-away from traditional economic, management and mathematical courses, the new course allows students to use the marketing skills developed at the university to create a media project: a TV series depicting the professors and students at the International University of Monaco.

Like 'real' production teams, students generate the concept, brainstorm ideas for the series and film their own five-minute trailer to advertise their new product. They also learn how to write a shooting script and to storyboard their ideas, and arrange production meetings and casting sessions with students and professors. They coordinate shooting sessions to film their promo in Monaco and San Remo on the Italian Riviera.

Part of the course entails consultation with a professional photographer who teaches students how to compose a photo to be the basis for their poster. Students have access to art lessons on composition and the use of subliminal messages in print advertising.

Course professor Charlotte O'Leary says: "The course was highly innovative as students were essentially learning how to market themselves, as well as explore the creative side of their brain which is essential for any successful business person."

On 3rd December the first intake of students will present their project to the rest of the students at IUM and the best film will be shown at the Fairmont Hotel in December for the Christmas Ball.

American student Noel Glaser says: "This class is such a great opportunity to explore our creative side. I love the unique approach to creativity this class brings; many of us are discovering interests and talents we never recognized in ourselves before."

The university hopes to run a similar workshop in theatre studies next year.
